As children get older and what they’re taught becomes more sophisticated, homework and revising for exams becomes more important. Having a dedicated space where your child can work has never been more important, particularly in light of the coronavirus pandemic. However, creating a kid's study for home learning can be fun and help your children focus on their studies. Read on to find out our top five tips for creating a classroom in your own home.

1)    Choose the space

If you've got the space, then it's a great idea to choose a room that's dedicated to home learning. This way, your child knows that they're expected to get on with their studies once they step through the door. However, if you don't have a spare room, an area of their bedroom will suffice. Whichever option you take, it's vital that the study zone is close to a window so that they can work in natural light and can get some fresh air if they need to.

2)    Choose the right furniture

Working well without a desk is next to impossible, by anyone’s standards. However, choosing the right one can make all the difference. Desks that are too tall or too low can result in cramps and poor posture. According to a study by cognitive scientists from the universities of Bloomington, Wisconsin, and Plymouth, this can have an adverse effect on learning. Similarly, the right chair can also help your child maintain their focus at the level of comfort that's right for taking in new information. Browse our collection of Kids Desks and Kids Chairs, and you'll find furniture designed for smaller bodies. You'll even find adjustable furniture that can be raised as they grow, helping to support them throughout their education.

3)    Control the clutter

Clutter in any room can serve as a distraction. Your child will inevitably need to use reference books, computers, pens, pencils, and textbooks as part of their daily learning routine. While they might be at home, their learning zone should be treated with all the respect of a classroom. As the saying goes, "a tidy room is a tidy mind." Installing shelving allows your young student to quickly access the information they need without the room becoming a mess. We offer a superb range of Shelving and Hardware, designed to provide efficient and elegant storage solutions to any room.

4)    Create an engaging environment

Wander into any school, and you'll find at least one wall covered in artwork. Research by the Pennsylvania State University has found that "art continues to provide opportunities for brain development, mastery, self-esteem, and creativity.” If there’s suitable space available, check out our selection of Wall Décor and Art. You'll find everything from tapestries and wall decals to charts detailing the phases of the moon. In addition, allowing your child to have some input on how their home classroom is decorated can inspire them to feel proud of their surroundings and improve their attitude towards homework and revision.

5)    Comfort corner

There will be times when sitting at a desk isn't conducive to certain tasks, such as reading. If you've some shelving stacked with reading books, then why not pop one of our beanbags or kids' comfortable chairs nearby? In addition, if your child is something of a pint-sized Picasso, then investing in a play-table or washable floor mat can help them get on with their artistic endeavours without making a mess.

Home learning has become an essential part of the lives of 21st Century children. However, while the lines between home and school might be slightly blurred, we at Crate and Barrel can help you create an education-centric space that’ll inspire your children to push themselves that little bit further.
