Christmas decorations aren’t just limited to the tree, a bit of tinsel around your picture frames, and some fairy lights. You have so much scope for a seasonal design flourish that it’s worth looking at individual areas as blank Christmas canvases that can be decorated to bring a little extra festivity into your home.

One of the key central focal points in a living area is your coffee table. If you think about it, Christmas coffee table décor makes perfect sense – it’s right at the centre of your communal space, it’s in everyone’s eye line, and it’s just begging to be jazzed up for Christmas!

Keep it simple

Coffee tables are hard-working pieces of furniture, so decorating them for Christmas is a great way to use a focal space in your room to its full advantage. However, they still need to function as a table, so you need to think creatively when it comes to tabletop Christmas decorations. Clutter it up too much and there’s nowhere to put the snacks when you’re watching the Christmas Day film!

Start with the basics – a festive table runner. This immediately adds a touch of Yuletide glamour without taking up any space. In fact, it can help keep your tabletop free of marks from glasses, bowls and mugs of hot chocolate, so it’s practical as well as pretty.

Think outside the box

If you want to keep your coffee table surface clear of clutter then why not decorate the edges instead? Christmas table lights can be attached around the edges of your table, so the surface is kept clear but you still have that festive feel. If you don’t want to use lights then try attaching botanicals such as garlands of red berries around the edges, or how about a red jingle bells garland to add an extra layer of Christmassy cheer?

Candles for Christmas

You can’t have Christmas without candles, and they also make ideal Christmas table decorations, too. From twinkling tealights in delicately latticed holders to tree candles with a charming scent of pine, candles create that true Christmas feel.

If you’re using candles to decorate a coffee table then do make sure that they’re out of the reach of young hands, and that they cannot be knocked over by accident. Always make sure your candles are fully extinguished at the end of the night, and never leave them unattended. If you want to be really safe, use a tea light holder that keeps your candle safe but gives you a wonderfully warm flickering effect, especially if you turn the lights down low!

Bows, botanicals, and bowls

Bowls of treats take centre stage at Christmas, so pick bowls that have a festive feel to them. Sparkling crystal looks awesome, especially with a ring of LED fairy lights around the base. Or brighten up a boring bowl by wrapping some coloured ribbons around the outside.

Botanicals make a great addition to Christmas coffee table décor, so why not add a vase of berry stems to bring some natural colour into the mix? The pop of red from the berries can be picked up by matching red cushion covers or throws for a wonderfully wintery feel.
