Back-to-School Décor: How to Create a Fun and Functional Study Space for Kids

Encouraging a love for learning is one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children. Though every child blossoms academically at their own unique pace, a fun and functional study space in the home can nurture a positive relationship with learning.

When children return to or start school, ensure you can complement their education with an engaging and well-equipped study space. Allow them to complete their homework effectively and follow their interests in a personalized environment that calms, inspires, and supports them as they get busy with their work. By sourcing beautiful furniture and accessories, you can create a child-friendly aesthetic wherever you're setting up this new space in your home.

Define the Space

Whether converting a spare room into your child's study area or creating a zone within their bedroom or the home office, clearly defining the space will help the child understand its purpose.

A great way to do this is by installing a desk for kids. Practical and often equipped with handy extra storage, a desk provides a solid and spacious surface for mark making, handwriting, colouring, homework assignments and computer work once they enter school.

Don’t forget to find a comfortable and ergonomic desk chair to help physically support your child as they work. With plenty of cute and contemporary models available, you’ll find a seat your child can’t wait to hop onto.

Tailored for Your Child

A study space should be free from distractions, but it must also be designed to stimulate and inspire your child’s mind. Think about how your child learns most naturally. Are they drawn to books? Do they like to write or draw to process their learning? Do they need visual and tactile aids, like colourful counters or cubes, when tackling math? Popping a bookcase for children or low shelving beside the desk allows them to easily access their favourite learning tools.

Get your child involved in creating their new work area. If there’s a topic they love, create a wall display of related images using a magnetic or cork board to protect the wall and easily make changes as your child's interests evolve.

The Finishing Touches

Teaching a child to be organised is an important step in effective learning. Keep pencils, crayons, and pens close at hand with a desk organiser and encourage your child to replace these items after use. Use attractive storage boxes and baskets to organise learning materials such as workbooks and craft items.

Create a snug reading area, enticing with vibrant and textural throw pillows, where you can settle down to spark their imagination or grow their knowledge with a good book. This little nook can also work well as a brain-break zone, where your child can take a few minutes to focus on a calming task if they’re becoming frustrated or bored with their desk work. Pop a basket of building materials, sensory toys, or their favourite play figures to help them unwind.

With this blend of focus and relaxation, you’ll create an optimal environment for learning and development.
