How to sleep better with our mattresses guide

A good night’s sleep is essential for your wellbeing, and can help you to feel alert and capable the next day. When you can’t sleep you won’t feel your best, you’ll feel ‘fuzzy’ all day (which could mean you make mistakes at work or are short-tempered and irritable), and it could even lead to long-term health problems. A good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to let your mind and body relax and regenerate, ready for the trials of the next day.

Your choice of mattress can make a big difference as to how quickly you can fall asleep and how well you stay asleep. Different mattresses will suit different people – some may prefer the traditional sprung mattress, while others may not be able to get a good night’s sleep unless they’re on a memory foam pad. To help you to choose the perfect mattress for you, we’ve created a quick guide to buying the perfect mattress.

Mattress on bed

What is a good mattress to improve my sleep?

Your sleeping position is the first thing to consider when you’re looking for a mattress.

  • Back sleepers

If you sleep on your back, you should look for mattresses that cushion your lower back. As a test, see if you can slide your hand under the base of your spine. If it’s easy, the bed may be too firm. If it’s tricky, the bed may be too soft. The Serta Posture Care King Mattress is a good allrounder, that isn’t too hard but still provides good levels of support.

  • Side sleepers

If you sleep on your side, choose a softer mattress that moulds to your shape to help to keep your spine straight. This can help to prevent back and joint pain. We love the Simmons Beautyrest Silver Plush Mattress Queen, which aids a more restful night’s sleep.

  • Front sleepers

Front sleepers normally need a firmer mattress to offer enough support so your back does not arch.

What is better: a foam mattress or a sprung mattress?

Memory foam mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses both offer good levels of support to help you drift off.

Choosing sprung mattresses

Sprung mattresses contain metal springs that give the mattress its ‘bounce.’ They are suitable for front, side, and back sleepers. You can also customise a sprung mattress to your specific needs as they come in three different ‘tensions’:

  • Soft, which is designed for body weights up to around eight stone.
  • Medium, suitable for people with a bodyweight of between eight to 16 stone
  • Firm, which is ideal if you weigh over 16 stones. We love the Simmons Beautyrest Silver Luxury Firm Mattress King, which uses hundreds of individually pocketed springs that adjust independently to give maximum support.

Is a memory foam mattress best for me?

Generally, people who prefer a firmer bed will like a memory foam mattress. They’re also great if you have back or joint pain as they follow the natural curve of your body.

Our Top Tip: Memory foam mattresses are a good choice if you suffer from allergies. They have anti-microbial properties and the foam is so dense that it is nearly impossible for even microscopic dust mites to penetrate them.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Most luxury bed mattresses will last between seven and ten years. To encourage a great night’s sleep you should aim to replace it after no more than ten years. Caring for your mattress with a protective cover can help to extend its lifespan.
